Frequently Asked Questions

How does ECU tuning gain horsepower?

The fuel and ignition curve is optimized for 89 octane or better fuel, Torque limiters are raised to a safe level. Electronic throttle bodies are controlled to allow 100% air flow when present. Often manufacturers will use the exact same engine for multiple horsepower models and simply detune them for the lower HP models. This allows Outboard EFI to easily get to the max HP and slightly beyond.

Does tuning an engine decrease the life?

No, during testing we find what the maximum horsepower achievable is and then reduce to a safe level for prolonged operation.

Does tuning an engine impact factory warranty coverage?

Yes, technically the manufacturers have the right to decline warranty coverage if an engine makes more power than it was sold making. We do not condone any warranty manipulation.

Does Outboard EFI guarantee horsepower ?

You bet! If you do not gain the horsepower we advertise we can restore the ECU to stock and refund your ECU license cost minus actual shipping cost.
Must be done with in 30 days of purchase.

How long does it take to flash the ECU if sent in?

We have extremely fast one day turnaround. This means that your ECU will be shipped back out within one business day of receiving it. Normal return shipping is standard ground. Expedited shipping is available, please select in store when checking out or send us an email and we can add it for an additional charge.

Will the fuel economy be affected once tuned?

The fuel economy at partial throttle is often as good or better than stock. If you are running at full throttle it does take fuel to make horsepower so you will consume a bit more.

Should I re-prop for added power?

We recommend installing the tune then seeing what your RPM is. Each flash has a target RPM. For best results you will want to be at you target when loaded and fueled to your normal weight.

Will factory diagnostic equipment work on tuned ECU?

Yes all diagnostic routines will function normal with Outboard EFI tune.

Do hours or service information get changed when tuning?

No, all service recording remain in tact on Outboard EFI tuned ECU's

What fuel is required on a OEFI tuned engine?

The best performance will be on 90+ octane but will still be safe on 89 rec fuel. If possible run Non Ethanol fuel since it is less corrosive to fuel system components.

Do you offer programming for HPDI models?

Not  at this time but we are looking into it.

What if my engine is not on the list?

We still may do it, please send message OutboardEFI@gmail.com . Include your Year , Make,  Model and a picture of your ECU
